S9V2

Furnace · S-series · two-stage · variable-speed · 96%

Trane/AS S9V2-VS 96% two-stage variable-speed. 3-character IFC (CoF, Ht1, Ht2, IdL, E2.1…). No dip switches. Last six errors stored. All Molex low voltage — no spade LV. This display language is not Carrier 31/33 and not Amana E2.

Not S9X2 (constant-torque, tap/profile setup, dip or profile bank). Not S9X1 (single-stage, one pressure switch, no W2 prove). Not XC95m (ComfortLink communicating modulating). Not S8X2 (80% Category I metal vent). Not an older Trane 2–9 flash XB/XV board.

Integrated Furnace Control · 3-character status

  • CoF = continuous fan (status). Not a capacitor, not a fault.
  • Ht1 / Ht2 = first / second heat stage running (status). IdL = idle. These are run states, not faults.
  • Faults are E plus a number and often a decimal. Write the full token: E2.1 is not ‘code 21’ and not Amana E2 (low PS).
  • Confirmed decimals (Trane FNR-SVN001 / service facts / HVAC-Talk OEM wording): E2.1 retry lockout; E3.1 shorted first-stage PS; E3.3 shorted second-stage PS; E4.1 open reverse-airflow limit.
  • Nearby decimals (E1.x, E3.2, E3.4, E5.x, E6.x, E11 / E12 / E13) — read the exact line on THIS S9V2 door card / service facts. Do not invent a title from a Carrier or Amana chart.
  • No dip switches. Airflow lives in the IFC menu. A dip bank means you are on S9X2 or an older XB.
  • All low voltage is Molex. A stabbed W tap on a pin is how these IFCs die.
  • Rain shield over the IFC — condensate dripping on the control is a real S9 failure mode. Reseat the shield.

Sequence

  1. IdL. Idle / no call. Display IdL or similar status word — not a fault.
  2. G / CoF. Continuous fan. VS blower at the IFC fan-on CFM. Not a heat sequence.
  3. W1. Inducer low → first-stage pressure prove → HSI → low-fire valve → flame → VS blower per IFC CFM table. Display Ht1 when it is real.
  4. W2. Inducer high → second-stage prove → second solenoid. Display Ht2 when it is real. Two switches, two hoses — do not tee them.
  5. E2.1. Three unsuccessful ignition tries on this heat call. One-hour-class retry lockout (OEM). Power cycle clears the timer, not the cause.
  6. E3.1 / E3.3. Shorted first- / second-stage pressure switch (Trane Link-enabled alarm table). Switch already made when the IFC expected it open.
  7. E4.1. Open reverse-airflow limit (S9V2 alarm table). Multi-poise unit — confirm the switch on the blower inlet for this orientation.

Faults on this IFC

  • CoF

    Continuous fan

    info

Status. G or IFC fan-on. Not a fault.

    • If the homeowner thinks it is ‘stuck,’ check G and the IFC fan menu.
    • Not a capacitor code.
  • Ht1 / Ht2

    Heat stage running

    info

Status. First / second heat stage is firing.

    • Ht1 forever with a W2 call → staging / high-fire prove, not a ‘bad Ht1 code.’
    • Ht2 with only W1 landed → W2 shorted or IFC staging on its own — confirm the call.
  • IdL

    Idle

    info

Status. No heat/cool/fan call the IFC is honoring.

    • If the house is calling and you see IdL, the call is not reaching the Molex (stat, harness, door switch).
  • E2.1

    Retry lockout

    lockout

3 unsuccessful ignition tries on one heat call. Lockout ~1 hour (OEM: RETRY lockout).

    • Watch a try: inducer, HSI, valve, flame. Which step dies?
    • Gas, igniter, rod, ground. Partial crossover / dirty burners on this exchanger look like random E2.1.
    • Manifold low-fire. A valve that barely opens lights two ports and drops.
    • Do not sit on power resets every hour. This is not Amana E2 (low PS).
  • E3.1

    Shorted first-stage pressure switch

    lockout

Trane Link-enabled alarm table: first-stage PS is shorted / already made when the IFC expected it open.

    • Unplug the first-stage switch. If the code changes, the switch is welded/shorted or the hose is holding residual draft or water.
    • If the code does not change with the switch unplugged, the IFC input or harness is shorted.
    • Confirm it is the FIRST-stage switch and hose, not the high-fire pair.
    • Do not treat E3.1 as an open/draft fault. That neighborhood is E3.2 if THIS door card shows it.
  • E3.3

    Shorted second-stage pressure switch

    lockout

Trane Link-enabled alarm table: second-stage PS is shorted / already made when the IFC expected it open.

    • Unplug the second-stage switch. If the code changes, switch/hose. If not, IFC input.
    • W2 shorted to W1 can keep the high-fire path made. Confirm the call.
    • Two switches, two hoses. A tee is a miswire.
  • E3.2 / E3.4

    Open first/second-stage PS (door-card confirm)

    lockout

If these decimals are on THIS S9V2 door they are the OPEN first- / second-stage PS counterparts to the confirmed shorted E3.1 / E3.3. Do not assert an unconfirmed OEM title — read the exact door line / service facts.

    • 96% trap and collector first. A drowned collector will not make either prove.
    • Inducer actually running at that stage? Listen / amp it.
    • Correct hose on the correct tap. Vent/intake ice — S9V2 attics do this all January.
    • Confirm the wording on THIS door card. Nearby decimals are not interchangeable with E3.1 / E3.3.
  • E4.1

    Open reverse-airflow limit

    warn

Trane S9V2 alarm table: reverse-airflow limit is open.

    • Multi-poise cabinet — find the reverse-airflow switch for THIS orientation (blower-inlet / opposite the heat exchanger).
    • VS heat CFM in the IFC menu (no dips). Filter, coil, return. Rise vs plate.
    • A missing or unplugged reverse-airflow jumper/switch on a converted orientation throws E4.1 with a cold exchanger.
    • Other limit / rollout decimals — confirm on THIS S9V2 door card / service facts. Do not invent E4.2 / E4.3 titles.
  • E1.x

Polarity / line / ground family (door-card confirm)

    lockout

Line polarity, missing ground, or IFC power-quality family. Read the exact E1 decimal on THIS door card / service facts — do not invent a title.

    • L1/N at the IFC, not just the disconnect.
    • Door switch, 24 V secondary, chassis ground to burner box.
    • Twinned or generator jobs — polarity flips after a transfer switch.
  • E5.x

Unexpected flame / flame sense family (door-card confirm)

    hazard

Flame-sense or unexpected-flame family. Confirm the exact decimal and OEM line on THIS S9V2 door card / service facts.

    • Unexpected flame: shut the cock. Leaking valve is a hazard — do not jump it.
    • No / weak prove: rod µA, ground, nitride, valve 24 VAC during trial.
    • Do not map these to Amana E4/E6 or Carrier 22/34 by number.
  • E6.x

Igniter / gas valve circuit family (door-card confirm)

    lockout

HSI or gas-valve electrical family. Confirm the exact decimal on THIS door card / service facts.

    • HSI ohms cold and 120 VAC during warm-up.
    • Valve coil ohms and 24 VAC at the Molex during trial.
    • Harness rub-through on the collector. Rain-shield drip on the IFC will throw garbage in this band.
  • E11 / E12 / E13

Indoor blower / IFC motor communication (door-card confirm)

    lockout

Field-reported on some S9V2 door cards as indoor blower / IFC-to-motor communication. Read the exact door line. Do not treat E13 as Carrier 13 (limit lockout).

    • Photograph THIS door card before you condemn the motor or the IFC.
    • VS harness seated at motor and IFC. Serial ECM, not an S9X2 tap motor.
    • Static so high the VS never reaches commanded RPM can look like a motor-comm fault — check filter/coil first.
    • E13 on this furnace is not Carrier 13. E11 is not a generic ‘board’ code until the door says so.

Workflows

E2.1 lockout loop

Ignites once or twice then dead for an hour.

  1. E2.1 is retries exceeded — not Amana E2 (low PS stuck/open). Do not change the pressure switch first unless you watched the inducer fail to prove.
  2. Stay for a full trial. Note whether HSI glows, whether you hear the valve, whether you see flame on 1 of 4 burners (a common S9V2 complaint).
  3. Partial crossover / dirty burners on this exchanger look like random E2.1.
  4. Manifold low-fire. A valve that barely opens lights two ports and drops.
  5. Ground and rod. Then HSI ohms.
  6. Rain shield: wet IFC will throw garbage codes including false lockouts.

Airflow setup (no dips)

Limit trips, noisy returns, or E4.1 after a ‘tune-up.’

  1. There are no dip switches. CFM lives in the IFC menu. If the last tech ‘set the dips,’ they were on an S9X2 or an older XB.
  2. Match cooling tons and heat rise in the menu to the coil and the plate.
  3. TES. VS will ramp into a brick and then limit / reverse-airflow.
  4. Do not pull an S9X2 tap motor or an S9X2 playbook onto this IFC.

E3.1 / E3.3 shorted PS

Display shows E3.1 or E3.3 before or at inducer start.

  1. These two are SHORTED (already made), not open/draft. Unplug the matching switch.
  2. If the code changes with the switch unplugged: switch welded, water in the hose, or residual draft holding it. Dry/replace the hose and ohm the switch open.
  3. If the code does not change: IFC input or harness shorted. Do not keep throwing switches.
  4. E3.1 = first-stage pair. E3.3 = second-stage pair. Wrong switch wastes the call.
  5. If the door also shows E3.2 / E3.4, those are the OPEN counterparts — different test (inducer running, trap, vent).

Test points

Display
Status words vs E-decimal. Write the full token (E2.1 not ‘2’, E3.1 not ‘3’).
Low voltage
Molex only. A stabbed W tap on a pin is how these IFCs die.
Flame
µA per S9V2 service facts.
PS unplug
E3.1 / E3.3: unplug that switch. Code change = switch/hose. No change = IFC input.
IFC menu
Heat and cool CFM. No dip bank on this unit.

Gotchas

  • American Standard S9V2 is the same furnace. Trane XC95m is not.
  • S9X2 looks similar in the basement and has a different motor and a different setup method (taps / profiles, not the VS menu).
  • S9X1 is the single-stage sibling — one PS, no W2 prove.
  • S8X2 is the 80% S-series. No PVC trap story.
  • E2.1 ≠ Goodman/Amana E2 ≠ Carrier 21.
  • E13 on this door is not Carrier 13. Read the S9V2 line.
  • E3.1 / E3.3 are shorted, not open. Do not dump the trap as the first move on a shorted code.
  • Rain shield off or cocked = wet IFC = garbage codes.
  • Nearby decimals without a confirmed OEM title: confirm on THIS S9V2 door card / service facts. Do not invent one.
